RC Nitro Trucks: Duratrax, HPI, Traxxas And RC Buggy

Friday night at the truck races under the lights and dirt is flying. Colorful trucks are flying off jumps and their fat knobby tires are digging for traction. The odd thing about this truck race is there are not any drivers in the trucks. The drivers are standing on an elevated platform with a radio controlled (RC) device in their hands controlling the action.

RC Nitro Trucks are one of the coolest toys ever built.

These scaled down monster trucks are built on using authentic suspensions that enable the truck to speed down a race track and over bumps, jumps and obstacles without tipping over. The technology of RC Nitro Trucks is truly impressive and the speeds one can reach is eye-popping. RC Nitro Trucks are literally running on nitro-glycerin in powerful, little internal combustion engines.

Competition among manufacturers is fierce and the choices of RC Nitro Trucks is broad. Traxxas has been around since the beginning of the Nitro RC truck development. Traxxas built the very first RTR (Ready To Run) Nitro RC truck called the Nitro Hawk in 1992. Traxxas offers a full line of 1/10 scale RC Nitro Trucks today. The Traxxas line includes the classic T-Maxx® that features the TRX®2.5 racing engine and will reach 40 mph. Or the newest T-Maxx 3.3 with a 3.3 TRX® racing engine that will reach a top speed of 45 mph. The T-Maxx has a two-speed autoshift transmission and disk brakes and unique Traxxas-developed 8-shock suspension. The T-Maxx has received the Best Nitro Truck award for four years running from “R/C Car Action Magazine.”

RC Nitro trucks are not the only screaming miniatures on the track these days. The RC Nitro truck revolution naturally led to other mini racing machines such as the RC Nitro Buggy. Traxxas makes an RC Nitro Buggy that is 1/6 scale and HPI makes one that is 1/5 scale. The HPI RC Nitro Buggy is called the Baja 5B. This is a RTR RC Nitro Buggy is built on a double wishbone suspension to handle the rigors of Baja style roads and conditions. It has a 23cc two-cycle engine that generates two horsepower for plenty of torque and power. HPI also builds RC Nitro Trucks such as the Savage X that features a huge 4.1 nitro burning engine.

RC Nitro Trucks are also built by Duratrax. Duratrax builds the RTR 1/8 scale Warhead EVO. This monster truck has a 4.4 cc racing engine and a patented posi-shift transmission. The Warhead EVO is unique among RC Nitro Trucks in it can be started two ways, either using the DuraTrax Kwik-Pit Super Start RTR or using a bump start using a starter box that revs up the flywheel. Six body styles are available to customize the Warhead EVO.

RC Nitro Trucks are serious radio controlled hobby models. Buying entry level RC Nitro Trucks and a controller will cost at least $300-$400 dollars. A Nitro RC Truck runs on nitro based fuel so the engines run hot and fast. RC Nitro Trucks and other vehicles like the RC Nitro buggy can attain speeds of up to 50 mph and anything moving that fast can be dangerous. Caution must be used when operating one of these awesome little machines; children need to be closely supervised. Nonetheless, most kids, even the those over 18, will enjoy the thrill of operating RC Nitro Trucks. So come on Santa, my letter is all ready to go.
